MRC adds Smith as a New Director of Sales and Marketing

MRC has appointed Nicholas Smith as the Director of Sales and Marketing for its efforts on the East Coast and portions of the Midwest. Smith brings more than 14 years of experience in the rail industry to his new role at MRC.

“First and foremost, Nicholas is a great communicator,” said Kevin Cook, who is the Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Development at MRC. “We were very impressed at his track record at (Union Pacific) and he has a great background – both in the marketing aspect and on the sales side. We knew he would be a great asset.”

Based out of the Philadelphia area, Smith will provide a wider presence for MRC to serve clients. Prior to joining MRC, Smith spent the past 14 years at Union Pacific – the last four in Philadelphia as a Senior Manager of Sales in the Chemicals department before acting as a Senior National Account Manager on the Premium Intermodal team. An Alabama native, Smith also spent 10 years serving in both marketing and sales capacities at UP’s headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

“I’m on the other side of the coin now, going from a company like Union Pacific, which is one of the world’s largest railroad companies, to joining MRC, which is a smaller, more intimate team that focuses more on the railcar side,” Smith said. “But there are similarities, other than the obvious rail connection. They’re the same in the sense that both are about developing and maintaining relationships with customers.”

Smith earned an MBA from Bellevue (Nebraska) University with a concentration in marketing and has a B.S. in Sales & Marketing and Business Administration from Tuskegee (Alabama) University.
