Many mill gondolas in North America are outdated and suboptimal, which means shippers may not be fully taking advantage of shipping opportunities.

• Only 84.3% of mill gondolas are utilized (many of which are older cars with limited loading capacity)
• Nearly 17K cars are over 40 years old (the average age is 27 years)

“Older mill gondolas have a lower loading capacity and there are many outdated gondolas out there,” said Bryan F. Vaughan, MRC Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Business Development. “With less space for commodities in those older gondolas, shippers can’t be as productive as they could be.”

With the demand for metal product expected to grow between 2025 and 2026, now is a good time for shippers to consider taking advantage of newer mill gondolas with an updated design that offers:
