Freight rail is often the primary method of transportation for lumber and wood products across the country – including milled lumber and other construction materials. Centerbeam flat cars carry bundled building supplies, including dimensional lumber, wallboard and fence posts, and the center I-beam truss on the railcar adds strength. Centerbeams are traditionally preferred for lumber transport due to they are able to be simultaneously loaded and unloaded from both sides. That means centerbeams can get back into service faster.

Centerbeams are designed to carry bundled building supplies, including dimensional lumber, wallboard and fence posts. They are essentially bulkhead flatcars reinforced by a longitudinal I-beam truss down the center of the railcar. Along with adding strength, the center truss helps protect cargo from damage caused by loads moving during transit. Due to their design, centerbeam cars must be loaded symmetrically, with equal payload on each side of the partition.
